What is a first look?

A first look is when a couple sees each other for the first time on their wedding day before their wedding ceremony. A first look allows the couple to privately see one another before the wedding ceremony.

Traditionally, couples see each other for the first time on a wedding day at the wedding ceremony. However, a trend growing in popularity is the first look. This is an alternative option to the typical wedding day tradition of waiting for a grand reveal at the wedding ceremony. While there is no right or wrong way to see each other for the first time (it’s your day, after all!), keep reading for a few of the benefits of having a first look on your wedding day.

Get the nerves out of the way

I’ve heard so many times from couples, “I think I would just feel a lot calmer if I could see them.” Well, you definitely can! First looks are a great way to get those nerves out, but still have a special moment where you see each other for the first time.

As you’re getting ready for your wedding day, the nerves are sure to build. You are mentally trying to go back through your list and make sure every detail is taken care of, you’re imagining walking down the aisle and feeling nervous, and you’re anxious to see the love of your life. First looks allow you to have a moment to slow down, take a deep breath, and see your person. I guarantee you will feel so much more relaxed for your ceremony.

Allows you to share a moment together privately

Let’s face it: Wedding days are BUSY and your rarely, if ever, get to spend much 1:1 time with your spouse. When I photograph first looks, I always get the initial reaction and stick around for a couple of minutes, but then I leave you alone for a bit to soak it all in. This is one of the only times all day you’ll truly get alone time.

Get your photos done before the ceremony

After you’ve seen each other, you can breathe and head into pictures feeling excited for the day. When you have a first look, photos of you two and your wedding party can typically all be done before the ceremony, meaning most or all of your photos are done before the wedding even beings. This means more time with your guests, which is a huge plus! It also allows you to just enjoy your day without worrying about squeezing in photos during cocktail hour. Not having to squeeze them in during cocktail hour also means more photos and plenty of daylight!

The feelings are just as (if not more) intense at a first look

Nothing compares to seeing each other for the first time on your wedding day. Couples who are on the fence about a first look are usually worried that it will not be as emotional as going the traditional route or that it will detract from the wedding ceremony. I am here to tell you both things are not true! First looks are incredibly emotional. In fact, because you can have your guard down (unlike when you have 100+ eyes on your during a wedding ceremony), you can react authentically and just be you! I have also seen numerous couples who cry during a first look and are still emotional during the wedding ceremony. It’s so different when you’re walking towards your person or they’re walking towards you to marry them. Nothing can take away from that special moment.
