If you plan it right, Chicago winter engagement photos are the perfect mix of cozy indoor moments and crisp, architectural outdoor backdrops, without the heavy crowds of spring and summer. Winter might not be the first season couples think of for engagement photos, but in Chicago, it’s one of the quietest, most intimate times for an engagement session.
Chandler + Roberto’s session is a great example of how to approach Chicago winter engagement photos. We split the shoot into two parts: a warm, intimate start at Bisous in West Loop, followed by a downtown moment near the Chicago Riverwalk and Wrigley Building.
Winter (and well, almost every season) in Chicago is unpredictable. Even on a “mild” day, it can be windy, gray, or just cold enough to limit how long you want to be outside. Starting your session indoors gives you flexibility and helps you ease into being photographed.
Bisous is a strong choice for a few reasons:
We used the bar setting for some relaxed, candid moments with a few posed shots sprinkled throughout. Chandler + Roberto sat side by side, ordered drinks, chatted, laughed, and snuck kisses, just like they normally would on a date night. Starting with something to do works well for couples who feel extra nervous about being in front of the camera. Instead of focusing on posing and the camera, you’re existing together in a way that feels safe and familiar.
Another great way to incorporate movement and activity into your engagement session is by going to an art museum. Check out this engagement session at The Art Institute of Chicago for inspo – it’s a good one!
After wrapping up at Bisous, we headed towards the Riverwalk. Winter here is quieter, which makes a big difference. In warmer months, this area is packed with tourists looking for a photo op (same, it’s a great spot!), people gathering, exercising, and more. In winter, you have more space to move and shoot without constant interruptions. That also means this part of your engagement session can move a little more quickly and get you out of the cold sooner.
What works well about the Riverwalk in the winter:
The key is to keep moving. We didn’t stay in one spot for long, but instead, we walked, paused for some photos, and kept the energy up so Roberto + Chandler didn’t get too cold. Movement also helps photos feel more natural and translates beautifully for your Chicago winter engagement photos.
We finished the session near the Wrigley Building, one of the most recognizable architectural spots in Chicago. It’s especially effective in winter because there are multiple gorgeous backdrops to choose from in a small area. Plus, the bright facade and the darker seasonal tones offer a gorgeous contrast.
This location gives you:
In colder weather, I incorporate lots of snuggling, holding, and hugging so you can keep each other warm.
Timing is also important. Late afternoon works well for Chicago winter engagement photos because the light is softer, and you can transition into early evening if you want a slightly moodier look.
Chicago winter engagement photos aren’t about pretending it’s warm, but about leaning in and embracing the season. The quieter streets, softer light, and more stripped-down version of the city give a different kind of atmosphere.
Some key advantages:
The biggest challenge is, of course, the cold, but it’s manageable with planning. Short outdoor segments, strategic indoor stops, and the right clothing make a big difference.
If you’re considering Chicago winter engagement photos, balance is the key to success. Pair a strong indoor location with a few intentional outdoor spots, and you’ll have a gallery that feels complete, practical, and true to the season.
